KB is back to Substack and June’s Reading List is here! Plus if you haven’t read Matthew Redd’s adventures by Ryan Steck… now is the time to start turnin’ those pages!
Hello y’all and welcome back to KB’s Substack! Time has passed since our last newsletter and article. To be honest, I have been working on a project that has eaten a lot of my time over the past five months. I am not ready to share details yet, but in time I will!
But guess what?! I am back! My goal is never to bombard with too many emails and articles. Going forward there will be no more than 1-2 email newsletters in a month. Additionally, I am working on some social media content… short form content and other for other platforms… more to come soon!
Now that we have that to the side… let’s dig into why we are here. Wait… why are we here? Because we love the mix of thriller, spies, and hard nose justice! Whether that be books, movies, or TV series, we have a bit of it all for you here! Today I want to share the three books I am most excited for being released in June!
June Book Preview:
There are tons of thriller books that release each year. I tend to highlight the big books and books that shouldn’t be missed. It is not a comprehensive list, so yes I will miss some. If you want a comprehensive list and reviews of each, check out The Real Book Spy for all your thriller needs. Here I like to highlight the books, or other spy thriller media, that excite me!
The upcoming month starts out with a series, that while young with only the third book hitting shelves this June, is an ABSOLUTE MUST READ!
KB’s Must-Read Book List for June:
OUT FOR BLOOD by Ryan Steck
Release Date: June 4th
KB’s Thoughts:
Matthew Redd is a bonafide hero that stands toe to toe with the thriller greats like Scot Harvath, Mitch Rapp, and Joe Pickett… to name a few of the greats is hard, but Matty Redd packs a punch!
Two books into the series and I am hooked. If you like authors like Jack Carr and C.J. Box, then you will surely enjoy this wild ride! OUT FOR BLOOD is one of my most anticipated books of the year! Ryan Steck’s Matthew Redd series is an absolute MUST READ for thriller fans! Please, take my word and enjoy these thrilling adventures.
The first book in the series FIELDS OF FIRE saw Matthew return to his hometown in Montana only to be haunted by his abrupt discharge from the Marine Raiders and pitted against corruption looking to not only threaten his home, but millions more.
The second book, LETHAL RANGE, continued the fight as Matthew Redd battled against Anton Gage and his evil plans to cleanse the world, or more so bring the world to its knees with a dangerous bioweapon to rid the fields and finish what he started.
Now Matthew Redd is back in action, not only looking to fend off page turning villains, but to protect those he cares about most, his family. OUT FOR BLOOD is like an exciting mix of Jason Bourne meets Yellowstone! Go pre-order this ASAP… time is running out!
Synopsis:
“Set in Montana’s breathtaking Big Sky Country and packed with intense, hard-hitting action, Out for Bloodreaffirms Ryan Steck’s prowess in the thriller genre, demonstrating once again why his character, former Marine Raider Matthew Redd, is a force to be reckoned with. If you're looking for action, this one’s coming in hot!" ― Jack Carr, former Navy SEAL Sniper and #1 New York Times bestselling author of the James Reece Terminal List series
From the Real Book Spy, Ryan Steck, comes another riveting thriller full of “gutsy action and nonstop mayhem” (James Rollins) in the series that New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille describes as “intense, brutal, and faster on the draw than a gunslinger.”
Winters in Montana can be deadly, but it wasn’t the cold that was killing Matthew Redd . . .
Gavin Kline, executive assistant director of the FBI’s Intelligence Directorate, is escorting a high-value prisoner with the intel to bring down a global conspiracy when their plane comes under attack. In the aftermath, much of Kline’s team is dead, but he recovers a phone from a member of the hit team that reveals another attack is imminent. This time they’re going after the man who was instrumental in capturing the prisoner and foiling their plans: Matthew Redd.
When Redd learns he’s in the crosshairs, he sends his family into hiding and heads for the mountains. He might be outnumbered, but the hit team will have to hunt him down on his own turf. With a snowstorm bearing down on Montana and no help in sight, Redd fights for survival in the harshest conditions. But when they take the fight to his hometown, he’ll need all his allies at his back to save what he holds most dear.
A page-turning thriller set in the heart of Montana, Ryan Steck’s third action-packed Matthew Redd novel is perfect for fans of the hit show Yellowstone and readers of C. J. Box and Jack Carr.

RED SKY MOURNING by Jack Carr
Release Date: June 18th
KB’s Thoughts:
It’s Jack Carr… need I say more? From THE TERMINAL LIST to IN THE BLOOD, we have seen James Reece’s evolution into one of the best thriller characters… ever. RED SKY MOURNING looks to continue that growth and challenge Reece in ways we haven’t read yet!
If you are now just getting to Carr in your TBR list, hurry up because this explosive novel is almost here! RED SKY MOURNING is my most anticipated book of the year and it arrives in time for summer reading by the pool. Not that my first read will be by the pool… I will be like a recluse gremlin and consume all 500+ pages in one evening, but my reread will be by the pool!
Synopsis:
With the walls closing in, Navy SEAL sniper James Reece is on a race to dismantle a conspiracy that has forced America to her knees in the latest high-octane page-turner that seems ripped from the headlines from the “hottest author on the thriller scene today” (The Real Book Spy), #1 New York Times bestseller Jack Carr.
You think you know James Reece. Think again.
A storm is on the horizon. America’s days are numbered. A Chinese submarine has gone rogue and is navigating towards the continental United States, putting its nuclear missiles within striking distance of the West Coast.
A rising Silicon Valley tech mogul with unknown allegiances is at the forefront of a revolution in quantum computing and Artificial Intelligence.
A politician controlled by a foreign power is a breath away from the Oval Office.
Three seemingly disconnected events are on a collision course to ignite a power grab unlike anything the world has ever seen.
The country’s only hope is a quantum computer that has gone dark, retreating to the deepest levels of the internet, learning at a rate inconceivable at her inception. But during her time in hiding, she has done more than learn. She has become a weapon. She is now positioned to act as either the country’s greatest savior or its worst enemy. She is known as “Alice” and her only connection to the outside world is to a former Navy SEAL sniper named James Reece who has left the violence of his past life behind.
Will there be blood?
Count on it!
Will the forces that threaten to destroy the United States be enough to light the fuse of Reece’s resurrection? From “master novelist” (Ballistic magazine) Jack Carr comes his most intense thriller to date, pressing “emotional buttons that other writers wouldn’t dare explore” (The Real Book Spy).
SENTINEL by Mark Greaney
Release Date: June 25th
KB’s Thoughts:
I love a lot of authors. Heck, the two listed above are some of my favorites. Ian Fleming and Vince Flynn will always be near and dear to my heart. If you put a gun to my head and told me to pick my favorite living author, I’d look to none other than Mark Greaney. His writing craft paired with the stunning stories woven around The Gray Man are my favorite. However, he is one of those authors that if the book cover has Mark Greaney printed on it, I am reading it!
SENTINEL is the second book in the ARMORED series. The book continues after the first, titled ARMORED, which stars Joshua Duffy. SENTINEL continues with Duffy as he is in the African nation of Ghana. Different than Court Gentry a.k.a. The Gray Man, Duffy however holds his own while darting in and out of danger. My favorite thing about Duffy is how Greaney has crafted a character that connects to the everyday person wishing they could do more, be better for themselves, but more importantly their family. I love the human connect that is on display and is done so in a fresh way that rivals any other series out there!
If you haven’t started reading The Gray Man series, get started ASAP! If you haven’t read ARMORED, get on it, but also fortunately Greaney does a good job at welcoming new readers to this series with SENTINEL. Jump right into Josh Duffy’s adventures by picking up SENTINEL this June!
Synopsis:
An African coup may force Josh Duffy to choose between his mission and his family in this intense thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Gray Man series.
Josh Duffy and his wife Nikki are both working for the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service providing protection for diplomats in the field. They've been sent to Ghana with a team of US embassy personnel who are there to highlight American commitment to the construction of a new dam.
Since Ghana is a stable democracy, the Duffy children have come along for a short vacation. But stability proves to be fleeting when a Chinese plan to embarrass the US means the destruction of the dam. Now Josh and his protectees are on the run caught between a Chinese hit squad and a rebel army.
Final Thoughts:
These are the three books I am most looking forward to reading in June! Comment below if there are any other thriller books you are excited to read!
